World Book Day

Katie Bale

#worldbookday has come around again, I love this celebration. As a child I would lose myself in many books, reading as late into the night as I could. It took me a little while to really get into reading but once I discovered adventure stories and fantasy that was it! The first books I ever LOVED and would read over and over were the Adventures of the Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. Then that same passion was reignited upon discovering Roald Dahl, I read all of his books, but my favourites were: The BFG, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox and The Twits. Now grown up, you will still find me with my nose in a book, or more often listening to an audio book whilst working (Stephen Fry reading the Harry Potter books has to be the most relaxing thing ever).

I've rediscovered many wonderful children's stories and stumbled across many more new ones in recent years; it's one of my favourite parts of motherhood. We collect a great many picture books, classics like The Hungry Caterpillar, Dear Zoo, Brown bear what do you see? and teachable tales like Somebody swallowed Stanley, Fergal tells a fib, Whimsical tales by Julia Donaldson are a big hit with my girls and I adore the beautifully illustrated infographic books about Nature. I eagerly await that time when myself and my two daughters (Zelda and Wilma) can sit and read a chapter each night, reliving those MAGICAL stories from my own childhood and I am beyond excited to try new books alongside them.

We frequent the library most weeks, Zelda loves a funny book, and she absorbs information about the subjects she loves with particular fervour. Wilma enjoys interactive books, she is doing the library reading challenge (250 books before she starts school). You can follow my personal account @Whimsy.andwildflowers to see a bit more about that. Reading is a truly special thing, I am incredibly thankful for library services, and whether you read one book a year or hundreds I'd love to hear about it.

I asked my followers to let me know their favourite childhood characters and books, or their children's current favourites. The Gruffalo was a top contender! followed by Stickman, Charlie Cooks favourite book, Spot the Dog and the BFG. There was a great variety though, I've tried to include as many as possible in a colouring page for you. As an added thank you for supporting me and reading my blog I've included two additional colouring sheets, one Julia Donaldson themed and the other Roald Dahl themed. If you colour any of these please do tag me on social media @myhollyhouse , I love a chat with fellow book lovers and crafters. Enjoy! Happy World Book Day 2024. Katie x
